I am delighted to have been elected President of IAMCR from the 2008 congresss in Stockholm. John Downing, Vice President
John Downing's research and teaching interests are in globalization, culture and media; social movement media; media, 'race' and ethnicity; and cinemas of the global South. He also regularly teaches a graduate course on theories of culture and media. He is currently editing a one-volume encyclopedia of social movement media. He is founding director of the Global Media Research Center, in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and previously was John T. Jones, Jr., Centennial Professor at the University of Texas, Austin (1990-2003). As one of two Vice-Presidents, John's remit covers two main lines of activity:

Hopeton Dunn, Secretary General
Hopeton Dunn is Professor of Communications Policy and Digital Media at the University of the West Indies (UWI), based at the Mona Campus in Jamaica. He is a leading communications scholar, researcher and policy analyst and holds an endowed Chair in Telecommunications Policy and Management. Hopeton is the Academic Director of the Master’s Degree Programme in Telecommunications Policy and Technology Management in the Mona School of Business, UWI. As IAMCR Secretary General since 2009 he also serves as lead organizer and Conference Chair for the annual conferences of the Association. He was for several years the joint Head of IAMCR's Communications Policy and Technology (CP&T) Section and a former Chairman of the Association’s Task Force on Global Media and Communication Policies. Professor Dunn is currently the Chairman of the regulatory Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica and a member of the country’s National Commission for UNESCO. He is an Associate Editor of the South African cultural and communications journal, Critical Arts, and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the journal, Telecommunications Policy. Hopeton serves as an Advisor to the Centre for Cultural and Media Studies (CCMS) of the University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, as well as an affiliate Advisor to the Centre for Communication and Social Change (CfCSC) at the University of Queensland in Australia. He is the founding Director of the Media Technology Institute (MTI) in Jamaica, a member of the Knowledge Society Foundation of Jamaica and a member of the Jamaica Press Institute, an affiliate of the Press Association of Jamaica. His five books and numerous journal articles and academic papers have been in the areas of New Media and Telecommunications, Theories of Globalization, Caribbean Cultural Studies and the Political Economy of African and Caribbean Media. He has delivered lectures or presented on academic panels on these subjects in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. His forthcoming publication, an edited volume, is titled Ringtones of Opportunity: Policy, Technology and Access in Caribbean Communications. Beate Josephi, Treasurer
Beate Josephi came to media and communication via a circuitous route, starting at history and literature, teaching briefly in both, chairing Australia’s premier literary festival, doing radio for many years, and arriving at full-time academia accordingly late. Her field of expertise is journalism, in particular the areas of journalism education and newsroom studies. From 2002 – 2008 she chaired IAMCR’s Journalism Research and Education section (previously Professional Education section), before taking on the role of treasurer. Beate Josephi is the Treasurer of IAMCR, charged with maintaining the accounts of IAMCR in good order, with preparing annual budgets and ensuring that appropriate procedures are followed in regard to financial matters. Bruce Girard is the director of Fundación Comunica. Comunica is IAMCR's virtual secretariat, taking care of membership and strategic communications. Girard's current research interests include community media, pro-poor telecommunications policy and regulation, civil society participation in policymaking and the use of ICTs by rural radio stations in developing countries.
