Visual Representations of Human Rights in Latin America

ImageConsidering that the 27th IAMCR Congress 2009 will be in Mexico City (July 21-24), it is appropriate to have a special panel session discussing how graphic and visual representations of human rights in Latin America are constructed through such topics as identity, immigration, minorities, citizenship, democratic opportunities, globalization, hybrid cultures, and so on.

The theme of Visual Representations of Human Rights in Latin America will be reflected through film and video, photography, television series, Internet sites, and any other form of visual media or graphic artifacts. The theme can be approached in different ways - politically, artistically, or socially. The objective of this Special Session is to promote interaction among researchers who deal with Latin America issues and to generate more contributions about Latin American issues and, possibly, more integrated research in the region.

The Call is extended to Latin American researchers as well as researchers who work on visual themes related to Latin America.

Abstracts accepted in English or Spanish (200-250 words).

Deadline: 16 February 2009.

Please send abstracts or expressions of interest in English to Denize Araujo (denizearaujo[AT]hotmail.com) and David William Foster (david.foster[AT]asu.edu), and abstracts in Spanish to Maria Immacolata Vassallo de Lopes (immaco[AT]usp.br) and Rose de Melo Rocha (rlmrocha[AT]uol.com.br).
 
The following Committee will evaluate the abstracts:
  • David William Foster, Ph. D.  Regents' Professor of Spanish and Women and Gender Studies, Arizona State University, USA, and Edna Gene and Jordan Davidson Research Scholar in the Humanities, Florida International University, Spring 2009.
  • Denize Araujo, Ph.D.  Coordinator of the Master´s Course in Communication and Languages-University Tuiuti of Paraná, PR, Brazil, and General Secretary of Compós-Brazilian Association of Post Graduate Programmes in Communication.
  • Maria Immacolata Vassallo de Lopes, Dr.  Coordinator of the Post Graduate Programme in Communication Sciences University of São Paulo, USP and Coordinator of the Center for TV Soap Opera Studies and of the International Project OBITEL – Ibero-American Observatory for TV Fiction Studies.
  • Rose de Melo Rocha, Dr., Co-Coordinator of the Master´s Course in Communication and Consumer Practices – ESPM – and Coordinator of the Groupwork CLACSO-Juventud y Nuevas Prácticas Políticas en America Latina.
A maximum of six abstracts will be accepted for the Panel. Both successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified by March 29, 2009.
