Join IAMCR online

IAMCR membership is for the calendar year (1 January - 31 December).

Why do new and established researchers join IAMCR?

They join because IAMCR is the worldwide professional organisation in the field of media and communication research, a field that is addressed from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives.

Membership in IAMCR offers online and offline opportunities for building strong, collegial and supportive networks among those who are making contributions to this field around the world.

Membership also entitles you to significant discounts when attending IAMCR conferences.

IAMCR’s members promote and defend the interests of the professional community of media and communication researchers in terms of freedom of academic thought and expression, and career development.

IAMCR hosts conferences, offers prizes for outstanding papers and manages publications series.

IAMCR is supported by the voluntary contributions of many people, including more than 100 Section and Working Group chairs and deputies, 30 members of its International Council, a five-member Executive, many members of various committees and task forces, and more than 3,000 active members of the association.

IAMCR organises an annual conference. In recent years conferences have been held in Prague, Paris, Caracas, Cairo, Barcelona, New Delhi, Bled, Guaruja, Porto Alegre, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Stockholm, Mexico City, Braga, Istanbul, Durban, Dublin, Hyderabad, Montreal, Leicester, Cartagena, Eugene, Madrid, Tampere (online), Nairobi (online) and Beijing (online). Our 2023 conference was hosted by Sciences Po Lyon, in Lyon, France. These events regularly attract between 1,000 and 1,600 researchers from dozens of countries. Our next conference will be held in Christchurch, New Zealand from 30 June to 4 July 2024, and hosted by the University of Canterbury.

This website provides information on the association’s activities, including the activities of its thematic sections and working groups. The member-only section of the site provides additional information and opportunities for networking and participation. In addition to IAMCR's public announcements list, and member-only email lists, IAMCR has added two new ways of following and participating online in the association's activities and debates – Twitter and Facebook. These platforms are used to promote members’ work, announce job openings and events, and as participatory spaces for debate.

Among the benefits reserved exclusively for members are:

  • Online access to selected materials from IAMCR conferences
  • Discounted prices on several books and journals
  • Membership in up to 3 of IAMCR's 33 sections and working groups
  • Access to and a listing in the membership directory
  • Opportunities to participate in the organization and development of the association

IAMCR is growing and improving what we offer members. New services are being developed that will make IAMCR an increasingly valuable way of extending your academic, research and friendship networks and finding information and people.

IAMCR offers individual and institutional memberships.

With a standard institutional membership you can name up to ten representatives* free of charge. Additional representatives can be added for a small fee. Institutional members can also name up to 10 PhD Student Representatives.* Click here to see a list of current institutional members.
