Book launch at WPFD 2017

The Assault on Journalism: Building Knowledge to Protect Freedom of Expression

One of the events that took place during the global celebration of World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) in Jakarta, Indonesia on 3 May was the launching of a book The Assault on Journalism: Building Knowledge to Protect Freedom of Expression.

The book grew out of  a two-day research conference on the safety of journalists held during last year's global celebrations of World Press Freedom Day in Helsinki Finland, on 3 and 4 May 2016. The conference examined  the contribution of research to securing the safety of journalism. It brought together more than 50 academics from six continents, and was held in partnership with IAMCR, UNESCO, the UNESCO Chair at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, and the University of Helsinki.

The book was launched during an academic conference on the safety of journalists in Jakarta. The academic conference was be streamed via Facebook Live beginning at 14:15 Jakarta time 3 May. The book launch and keynote began in the 2nd session. The streaming of the academic conference continued throughout the day and again on 4 May.

The Assault on Journalism: Building Knowledge to Protect Freedom of Expression, edited by Ulla Carlsson and Reeta Pöyhtäri, is one of the first global research works on safety of journalists, and was produced in collaboration with IAMCR and UNESCO.

In its more than 350 pages and contributions from more than 40 authors, The Assault on Journalism makes a solid case for a research agenda to promote freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
