Communiquer issue - IAMCR 2015

Communiquer, a journal published by the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), host of IAMCR’s 2015 conference, has just published a special issue based on the conference theme, Hegemony or Resistance? On the Ambiguous Power of Communication.

The issue features a selection of papers presented at the conference, in their original language and in French.

Travel grants foster diversity

Patricia Lima is a health communication researcher in Paraguay's Ministry of Public Health. She received a travel grant to attend IAMCR 2015 in Montreal and to present her paper, "Patterns and risk communication issues during the contingency against Chikungunya in print media of Paraguay, from June to October 2014" to the Environment, Science and Risk Communication Working Group.

IAMCR's 2015 conference 2015 was a inspiring experience to me because it made me realise that every contribution that we can make to the communication research field is worth it.

It was my first time at an IAMCR conference and I was impressed with the huge variety of topics related to communication research and diversity of the participants, who came from dozens of countries worldwide, although low and middle-income countries were under-represented because financial restrictions.

That under-representation is why IAMCR's policy of providing travel grants is so important and I hope that it will continue. The grants foster diversity, and the multiple perspectives they encourage help us to rethink the very foundations of human communication, its potential for producing and transmitting culture and its role in the progress of science and technology.

After this fantastic experience, I returned to my country, Paraguay, with enthusiasm and ideas to continue contributing to this field of knowledge. I really hope to have the opportunity to participate again in a future IAMCR meeting, which provides a diverse display of what it happening in communication research.

A redefining experience

K.S. Mochish is a Doctoral Fellow at the School of Media and Cultural Studies of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, India. He received a travel grant to present the paper “Negotiating Gender and Caste Publicly: An Analysis of the Struggles of a Woman Tribal Leader in Wayanad, India” to the Gender and Communication Section.

IAMCR's 2015 conference was the biggest multi-cultural academic event I have ever attended and provided me new experience and learning through interacting and observing the delegates from different socio-cultural backgrounds and nationalities. I truly believe that these international interactions and exposures provide a person from a developing country like India a greater scope to redefine one’s future academic and personal life.

Getting an opportunity to participate and present a paper at IAMCR 2015 with the financial assistance of IAMCR was one of the greatest opportunities I have received in this early stage of my academic life. It will certainly guide my future academic endeavours and give me greater focus and enthusiasm. Presenting my paper, “Negotiating Gender and Caste Publicly: An Analysis of the Struggles of a Woman Tribal Leader in Wayanad, India”, to the Gender and Communication Section provided an opportunity for sharing my thoughts and opened a new horizon of critical engagement. The after presentation discussions were productive and gave me new insights into variety of different angles for my current research focus.

My sincere request to IAMCR is to continue with the financial support for people from the low income countries because this support enables us to take part in a gigantic multicultural platform like IAMCR and to share our knowledge and experiences. I have immense faith in the positive role that experience and academic interaction during the conference plays to expand the capabilities of people from these regions through sharing and engaging in critical discourse with similar professionals from across the world.

My longstanding desire to visit new cultures in different continents became possible only through the financial assistance of IAMCR. It not only made my paper presentation possible at IAMCR but also gave me an opportunity to understand and experience the multi-cultural fabric of Montreal, Canada. My world view was further increased with multiple new perceptions about the western world.

I would like to thank IAMCR for giving me this opportunity to explore a totally different academic atmosphere through supporting my travel to Montreal and allowing me to participate and present a paper at the IAMCR 2015 conference. I hope it provided a mutual leaning opportunity – both for me and for IAMCR. I hope to incorporate my new critical insights into my research engagements in my home country. I believe that the experience I gained through attending this conference will contribute to enhance not only my academic life but also the academic atmosphere around me.

Diversity is essential to IAMCR

Luíza Alvim was temporarily employed as a lecturer in communication at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil when she received a travel grant to attend IAMCR's 2015 conference in Montreal. She presented her paper, “Rhythms of images and sounds: an analysis of films by Robert Bresson”, in the Visual Culture Working Group.

IAMCR 2015 was very important to me as it made it possible to strengthen the links I established with the Visual Culture Working Group, in which I presented for the second time, the first being in Hyderabad in 2014. It was again an opportunity to share my work beyond the boundaries of my own country and Portuguese speaking people.

Being at an IAMCR conference for the second time also gave me the feeling of meeting old friends, while, at the same time, meeting new specialists in my research field (Music, Sound and Cinema).

I could only attend this year conference thanks to the travel grant I received, as I am about to be unemployed and July is an expensive month to travel. I feel very grateful for this chance but also sad because it will be very difficult to continue attending future conferences without travel grants.

I hope IAMCR's policy of grants will continue helping other people like me - from low and middle-income countries and with no tenured position – to attend the conferences. Diversity is essential to a great international conference like IAMCR, and it is partly ensured by the support of our participation. So, thank you again for promoting it.

IAMCR 2015 - Plenary sessions online

IAMCR 2015's plenary sessions can be watched online in their original languages. Click on the links below to read more about the speakers and themes and to watch the plenaries. Sessions are available in their original languages only.

Plenary Session 1 was held on Monday 13 July from 11:00 to 12:30. Martin Becerra spoke on Concentration in the Era of Convergence and Clemencia Rodríguez spoke on Citizens’ and movements’ use and appropriation of media technologies. The session was chaired by Carmen Rico of the Université de Québec à Montréal.
Plenary Session 2 was held on Tuesday 14 July from 11:00 to 12:30. The panel gathered David Lyon, from Queen’s University, Ontario and Carly Nyst from Privacy International, and the discussion on Surveillance and Resistance was chaired by Chris Paterson, from the University of Leeds.
Plenary Session 3 was held on Wednesday 15 July from 11:00 to 12:30. Serge Proulx of the UQAM and Suzanne de Cheveigné from the CNRS spoke on The injunction to participate in the digital world.
Plenary Session 4 was held on Thursday 16 July from 11:00 to 12:30. Andrew Feenberg spoke on The Internet in question and Robin Mansell spoke on Imagining the digital world: ambiguity, power and the question of agency.
Plenary Session 5 was held on Thursday 16 July from 16:00 to 17:00. Professor Jamal Eddine Naji closed the conference with a presentation on Communication and Democracy: local contexts and cultural identity discourses. This video of this session also includes the conference's closing ceremony.

A very rewarding experience

Nelly Lara, a PhD student in the Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), received a travel grant to attend IAMCR's 2015 conference in Montreal.

The 2015 conference was my first opportunity to deliver a paper at an IAMCR conference. In 2009, when the conference was in Mexico, I attended as a member of the local organising group, but this time was different as I was able to share my research. My paper, Prácticas Discursivas de las Mujeres Artistas en la Cultura Hip Hop de la Ciudad de México (Discursive practices of women artists in Mexico City's Hip Hop Culture) was presented in the Gender and Communication Section.

Being part of the Gender and Communication Section was a very rewarding experience. To be able to meet world-class researchers working to advance women's human rights was an inspiration to me and reminded me of my own responsibility to become a better communication researcher in order to be able to better contribute to society.

I also participated in meetings of the Global Alliance for Media and Gender (GAMAG), a worldwide proposal to end violence and discrimination against women in the media that IAMCR is a member of.

Being able to visit Canada for the first time was also fabulous. Montréal fascinated me: a beautiful and multicultural city with lots of activities and people who speak English, Spanish and French alike. The diversity of its cultural richness is apparent in its streets and neighborhoods, inhabited by people of various nationalities.

All this would not have been possible without the support IAMCR offered me in the form of one of the travel grants it offers to researchers from developing countries. This support made my trip, and the opportunity to share my work at an international communication conference, possible.

I want to encourage all members of IAMCR to continue supporting the travel grants. They are are a valuable contribution of the association and its members and enable young researchers like myself to present their work and to learn.

Finally, I want to thank IAMCR, its members and other partners. I return to Mexico with a greater awareness of my own responsibility to contribute by doing more and better communication research.

IAMCR expanded my horizon of critical engagement

Sanchari De, a research scholar at Jadavpur University in India, received a travel grant to attend IAMCR 2015 in Montreal and present her paper "Political Mobilization and the Network of Shared Cultural Connectivity: An Attempt to Locate The Shahbag Movement in Bangladesh beyond the Realm of Virtual Sphere" to the Emerging Scholars Network.

Montreal was my first IAMCR conference and I had an engaging experience. The experience was very fruitful not just because I got the chance to discuss my research interest with like-minded peers, but also because I was able to engage with different reseach interests which expanded my horizon of critical engagement. I also got to experience the academic environment in Montreal.

The Emerging Scholar Network (ESN) was very active in bringing scholars together. Apart from providing constructive comments on my paper, ESN arranged social gatherings and we were all given the opportunity to provide feedback for the betterment of IAMCR. The social gatherings arranged by IAMCR provided good opportunities to connect with other scholars. Moreover, the gatherings left me refreshed and helped me to start the next day with a rejuvenated mind.

The format of IAMCR conference might appear to be intense and exhausting. However, I found this kind of format is a good academic experience where we can get the chance of getting engaged in an intense schedule. IAMCR also provided me with the oppportunity to interact with publishers and avail the exclusive discounts they were offering for IAMCR participants.

I wish to thank IAMCR for organising this conference and granting me the travel funds and I am looking forward to attending the next conference in Leicester!

Positive, pleasant, progressive, constructive, co-operative

Brian Pindayi from Rusangu University in Zambia received a travel grant to attend IAMCR 2015 in Montreal and present his work Press framing of the (2014-2015) Ebola crisis: A comparative case study of, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe to the Communication and HIV/AIDS Working Group.

IAMCR 2015 was an an invaluable experience that enabled me to gain insights I would have never attained otherwise. My worldview was transformed, my horizons broadened, my perspectives sharpened and I am more energised. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of interaction with participants at the conference.

The formal discussions within the Communication and HIV/AIDS Working Group were motivating and incisive. I enjoyed all the plenary sessions and found them to be highly informative and inspiring.

Equally inspiring were the informal conversations I had during the tea breaks that resulted in an exponential growth of my social networks. I made fantastic acquaintances that helped extend my appreciation of different cultures and worldviews.

The feedback and discussions that emanated from my presentation on Press framing of the (2014-2015) Ebola crisis: A comparative case study of, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe were invaluable. I will henceforth attend every IAMCR conference because of the unique platform to interact with scholars and to drink from a well of current research trends and concepts.

I commend IAMCR for giving me the opportunity to discuss research issues and concepts with seasoned minds and warm personalities. My impression of the members and donors who made such an opportunity possible is irrevocably: Positive in that delegates were interested in each other’s work; Pleasant in that all interactions were in an amenable environment; Progressive in that discussions and plenary sessions were forward looking or oriented; Constructive in that candid questions were asked and solutions offered; and Co-operative in that mutual growth was an underlying objective in the presentations that were made in working group sessions.

To the IAMCR executive board, members and other stakeholders that made the travel grant and conference possible I would like to say: thank you, mille fois merci, muchas gracias.

May the travel grants continue to be offered to many more in the years to come!

More than the scholar I had been

Rosemary Chikafa from the Department of English and Media Studies of the University of Zimbabwe received a travel grant to attend IAMCR 2015 in Montreal and present her work Hegemony or Resistance? An African(a) womanist reading of Sembene’s Moolaade to the Gender and Communication Section.

IAMCR 2015 at UQAM Montreal was my second after Durban 2012. I have since held IAMCR and its conferences in high esteem and I was not disappointed in 2015.

The IAMCR conferences remain invaluable to me and if there are no extenuating circumstances I will definitely attend every future IAMCR conference! I am pleased by the level of inclusivity that IAMCR offers; the South-North conversations prevailed for me not only through my presentation on African cinema and Africana womanist theory - Hegemony or Resistance? An African(a) womanist reading of Sembene’s Moolaade - but also through interactions with scholars from diverse academic environments and nationalities.

I applaud IAMCR for the travel grant that supports young researchers from low and middle income countries like me. As an emerging scholar, I was able to present my paper and be heard while at the same time gaining knowledge from constructive responses from other scholars. Meeting veteran scholars was a milestone and learning through them was the academic nurturing I had looked forward to.

I particularly enjoyed the plenary sessions among other presentations from the Gender and Communication Section and from other sections and working groups whose sessions I attended. I even made friends and formed academic networks that will make my academic pursuits richer.

I can confidently say I am more than the scholar I had been before I attended the 2015 IAMCR conference.

Merci IAMCR! I extend my gratitude to the IAMCR executive board, membership and donors towards the travel grant. You made it possible for me to attend this conference and to grow my academic career.

Goodbye Montreal!

IAMCR's 2015 conference in Montreal, Canada has ended. Under the theme Hegemony or Resistance? On the Ambiguous Power of Communication, this year's conference brought together more than 1,300 scholars from all over the world engaged in research in a broad spectrum of media and communication areas including international communication, community communication, media and the environment, gender and communication, among others.

They joined in lively discussions at hundreds of parallel sessions, five plenaries, and a host of other activities that connected communities and researchers, bringing the world of academia closer to the lives of community activists, policy makers and industry professionals. In this spirit, we hope to welcome all of you again next year at IAMCR 2016 from July 27-31 in Leicester, the United Kingdom.

We hope you had productive time at IAMCR, that you are returning home full of inspiration and energy, and that your work will be enriched by ideas exchanged in Montreal. We hope that every IAMCR session you attended gave you new insights and enabled you to share your own ideas with colleagues. And we hope that you had possibilities to meet new people, and to re-connect with old friends and colleagues.

In a few days we will send you an invitation to complete a brief online evaluation of IAMCR 2015. Let us know what you liked and what disappointed you about IAMCR 2015. Your cooperation will help us make future conferences even more rewarding.
