The History Section of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) invites submissions of abstracts for papers and panel proposals for the IAMCR 2015 conference to be held in Montreal, Canada, from 12th to 16th July 2015. The deadline for proposal submissions is 9 February 2015.

The History Section is interested in papers bearing on all the historical dimensions of media research. Some specific themes to consider for 2015 include the following:
- Media, Communications and Empire
- Media biography and history
- Research methodologies – as pertinent to 2015 conference theme – and media history
- History of news companies – national, international and transnational perspectives
- Public Relations and media in historical perspective
- History of foreign news reporting
- Advertising and media in historical perspective
- Development of media history research in comparative perspective
- Censorship and the media in historical perspective
In relation to this year’s theme, "Hegemony or Resistance? The Ambiguous Power of Communication”, participants might want to consider the contribution of history to:
- Critical historical approaches to cultural and media industries
- Nationalism, colonialism, and practices of resistance
- Hegemony, creativity and citizenship
- Social networks and new forms of control
- 21st century regional concerns in a globalized-media sphere
- Communication inequality: historical and contemporary perspectives
Important indications about paper and panel proposals
Paper proposals should be of 450 to 500 words long, and should list the paper’s title, author's name, address, university affiliations, telephone, fax, and e-mail. The abstract should specify the subject, main question, aims, theoretical framework, methodology and indicate some of the findings, if pertinent.
Panel proposals should include a title, description of the central theme and subthemes, number of panellists (max 4), and the name and e-mail address of the person responsible for the panel. Each panellist should submit an abstract listing the paper’s title, the author's name, address, university affiliations, telephone, fax, and e-mail.
Proposals will be blind peer reviewed using the conference system and utilising reviewers from the IAMCR database and from volunteers. The Co-Chair of the History section, Dr Chandrika Kaul, will contact these colleagues directly.
Criteria for evaluation (as agreed to at the Section and Working Group Heads' meeting in Hyderabad 2014): submitted abstracts will generally be evaluated on the basis of 1) theoretical contribution, 2) methods, 3) quality of writing, 4) literature review, 5) relevance of the submission to the work of the section or working group, and 6) originality and/or significance of the work.
Submission of abstracts is to be done online through the IAMCR's OCS (Open Conference System, using this link: http://iamcr-ocs.org.
The OCS system will be available to receive abstract submissions by December 1, 2014. The deadline for submission is February 9, 2015 (OCS closed). Early submission is strongly encouraged.
The History Section is only able to receive abstracts in English. There are to be no email submissions of abstracts addressed to any Section or Working Group Head.
It is expected that for the most part, only one (1) abstract will be submitted per person for consideration by the Conference. However, under no circumstances should there be more than two (2) abstracts bearing the name of the same applicant either individually or as part of any group of authors. Please note also that the same abstract or another version with minor variations in title or content must not be submitted to other Sections or Working Groups of the Association for consideration, after an initial submission. Such submissions will be deemed to be in breach of the conference guidelines and will be automatically rejected by the Open Conference System, by the relevant Head or by the Conference Programme Reviewer. Such applicants risk being removed entirely from the conference programme.
Upon submission of an abstract, you will be asked to confirm that your submission is original and that it has not been previously published in the form presented. You will also be given an opportunity to declare if your submission is currently before another conference for consideration.
Presenters are expected to bring fully developed work to the conference. Prior to the conference, it is expected that a completed paper will be submitted to Section Chairs.
