Singapore Travel Tips

Weather & Time Zone

Singapore enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures ranging from 25-33ºC throughout the year. Light, breathable clothing is recommended due to heat and humidity. Sudden rain showers are common, so it is highly advisable to carry a compact umbrella with you at all times.

Singapore follows Singapore Standard Time (GMT +8).

Power Supply

Singapore operates on a 220-240V AC electrical system (50Hz). Power plugs with three square prongs (Type G) are used.

Wireless Internet Access

Please note that Wi-Fi will be available at conference venues but not at the hall accommodation or around the campus. It is highly recommended that participants pre-purchase an e-Sim or Wi-Fi router online before the event.

Regulations and Public Behaviour

Cleanliness and Dining Etiquette

Cleanliness is a shared value, and everyone is encouraged to play a part in keeping public spaces pleasant. At food courts, hawker centres, and coffee shops, diners are kindly expected to return trays and crockery to the designated stations, in support of the National Environment Agency’s (NEA) Clean Tables Campaign.

In shared dining areas, you may see people reserving seats using tissue packets or personal belongings—this chope culture is a familiar and accepted local practice. Visitors are encouraged to respect this custom.

To help keep the environment clean, please dispose of litter properly, including small items like candy wrappers or cigarette butts.

Eating and Drinking on Public Transport

To ensure a clean and comfortable experience for all commuters, eating and drinking are not permitted on MRT trains, buses, or within stations. We encourage everyone to finish any food or drinks before entering public transport areas.

Public Safety and Order

Singapore places strong emphasis on public safety and social order. For your own safety and that of others, please use designated pedestrian crossings such as zebra crossings, overhead bridges, or traffic light junctions.

Queueing is a courteous and widely observed practice, whether at food stalls, train platforms, or taxi stands. Waiting your turn is appreciated.

Smoking, Chewing Gum, and Drug Laws

Smoking and vaping are not allowed in most public areas, including at the conference venue (Nanyang Technological University), transport hubs, eateries, and sports facilities. Do look out for clearly marked designated smoking areas, if needed. More information can be found in NTU’s Smoking Policy and the NEA website.

Chewing gum is generally restricted in Singapore, with only therapeutic dental gum allowed when prescribed by a doctor.

Drug laws are strictly enforced, with serious penalties for the possession, consumption, or trafficking of illegal substances. Even trace amounts in the body may lead to prosecution.
