Visas and Visa Support Letters

Participants are responsible for making their own visa arrangements, if required. This page provides information that may assist you.

Visas & Passports

All visitors to Ireland must hold a valid passport. Citizens of European Union Member States may travel using a valid national identity card. Participants are strongly advised to check with their airline regarding accepted travel documents, as some airlines operating within Europe accept passport identification only.

Do I need a visa?

Participants from certain countries are required to obtain a visa to enter Ireland. The Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform has primary responsibility for Ireland’s immigration and visa policy. For information on visa requirements for Ireland please see their website section on Visas for Ireland

All participants are also encouraged to check with the Irish Embassy, Consulate, or Visa Office in their country of residence, or to consult the official government website for up-to-date information. Participants should also confirm visa requirements with their airline or travel provider before travelling.

How do I apply for a visa?

You can apply for a visa using the online AVATS process:

Before beginning the online process you should have the following information available:

  • Passport and details of any previous passports– number, date of issue/expiry
  • Details of any previous Irish visa applications
  • Contact details for your host in Ireland & itinerary

Following submission of your online application using AVATS, you will also be required to submit a signed summary of your application form, original passport, passport-sized colour photograph, the relevant fee, and all supporting documents, to the relevant Irish Embassy/Consulate/Visa Office per your application procedures.

When you complete the AVATS process, the printed summary will indicate the appropriate office, applicable fees, and accepted methods of payment. Please ensure that you read the visa information contained on the website www.inis.gov.ie and their provided Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS).

Visa processing times for Ireland can take six weeks or longer. Participants are strongly advised to begin the visa application process as early as possible.

Please note that some visa offices may require proof of accommodation for the full duration of your stay. It is advisable to have accommodation booked before submitting your visa application.
