1/ IAMCR 2019 CONFERENCE IN MADRID
The PCR Section again congratulates all colleagues that have had their work accepted for presentation at the IAMCR conference in Madrid. Until this moment, around 80 members of PCR Section from various countries on the world are preparing to attend the conference. This year, the PCR Section will have 18 conference panels: 10 panels in English and 8 panels that are mixed language sessions - English & Spanish; language facilitators will be present in these mixed-language panels. The panels are being built on the basis of their thematic affinity, with the aim of bringing together academics and researchers working on the same issues, irrespective of the language of their presentation.
The PCR panels will cover a wide range of topics in the context of participation, e.g., video content (“Participatory Video and Beyond”), identity (“Participation and Identity (Work)”), urban development (“Participation and Development”, “Civic Participation and The Right to and Rites of the City”, and “The Urban and Participation”), education (“Participation and Education”), art (“Artistic and Creative Participatory Practices”), philosophy (“Philosophies and Theories of Participation”), (social) media (“Media Industries as En/Disablers of Participation”, and “Social Media Participation”), politics (“Participation, Politics and Policies“), democracy (“Social Movements as Democratic-Participatory Force”, and “Democratizing the Economy”) and activism (“Activism and Participation”).
The panel entitled “Community/Alternative Media and Participation” is co-sponsored with the Community Communication and Alternative Media Section and will be chaired by Hillel Nossek and Andrea Medrado. The PCR Section programme are includes 3 pre-constituted panels: “Global Perspectives on NGO and Non-Profit Communications for Social Change” chaired by Giuliana Sorce, “Civic Participation and The Right to and Rites of the City” chaired by Susan Drucker, and “Role and Place of Media and Communication in Progressive Social Change” chaired by Srinivas Melkote.

2/ PCR GET-TOGETHER IN MADRID ON 8 JULY 2019
The PCR Section is organising a get-together at the end of the first day of the Madrid conference. This get-together will take place on Monday, 8 July 2019, in the Beer & Grill restaurant, at 18:45. All are welcome.

3/ PCR KEYNOTE TALK BY THOMAS TUFTE
The PCR Section Keynote Talk for this year will be delivered by Thomas Tufte (from the University of Loughborough, UK). The title of his talk is “Liberating Pedagogy in Participatory Communication: Exploring the Legacy of Paulo Freire.“
This PCR Section Keynote Talk will take place on 8 July 2019 in Aulario C006. It will start at 8:30 AM. The session will be chaired by the head of Participatory Communication Research Section, Nico Carpentier.
This is the abstract of his talk: “In 2006 I co-edited a large anthology on 50 years of history and development of Communication for Social Change. It was based on a global call for relevant publications, receiving more than 1200 submissions, and with the help of an international advisory board, it resulted in the selection of 200 articles and excerpts of articles in what became a very large book (over 1000 pages!). It revealed some key points about the field: the fundamental connection between participatory communication and communication for social change; the strong Latin American contribution (over 40% of the entries); and the very strong inspiration from Paulo Freire in many of the entries (Gumucio-Dagron and Tufte 2006; Spanish version: 2008). These features spark questions relevant for this IAMCR Section such as: what elements of Freire’s thinking and practice made him so seminal? And today, almost 15 years later - following financial crisis, digital media developments, Arab Springs and other uprisings, and with significant political changes – what is the legacy of Paulo Freire in the field of participatory communication? This presentation will do three things: firstly, it will introduce Paulo Freire, the history and development of his trajectory and his key concepts, mapping the circulation of his ideas, and with emphasis upon the field of participatory communication. Secondly, it will assess the current Brazilian controversy around the legacy of Freire, and finally, it will critically assess the international, contemporary applicability of his ideas.”

4/ PCR IAMCR 2019 BUSINESS MEETING ON 8 JULY 2019
The PCR Section is organising its Business Meeting at the Madrid conference. The PCR Business Meeting will be held on 8 July 2019 in Aulario C006 from 17:30 until 18:15 PM (after the last panel session of the day and before the PCR Section get-together).
The members of Section Management Team are looking forward to meet with PCR Section members and friends, to discuss the workings of the PCR Section.

5/ PCR VIDEO PRESENTATIONS IN MADRID
The PCR programme at IAMCR 2019 conference includes 2 video presentations. Video presentations are videos produced by PCR presenters, that are screened during the conference, in the regular PCR panels. After the screening, the Q&A takes place through Skype.
The first video project, created by Alexander Fattal, is entitled “Shooting Cameras for Peace! Critical reflections on the dialectic between product and process in a participatory photography peace building project in Colombia”. This video presentation will rethink the ethics of participation in the context of urban violence and economic marginalization in Colombia. The video will be screened in the “Participatory Video and Beyond” panel.
The second video presentation was submitted by Sawsan Atallah Bidart. The project called “Participatory Communication in International News Production” has the ambition to show how international news production can be a form of participatory communication, comparing participatory journalism with professional or traditional journalism. The video project will be screened in the “Media Industries as En/Disablers of Participation” session.
These presentations are the outcome of an experimental initiative, launched by five IAMCR sections and working groups (S&WGs). These sections and working groups are: The Participatory Communication Research Section (PCR), the Community Communication and Alternative Media Section (CCAM), the Popular Culture Working Group (POC), the Media and Sport Section (MES) and the Environment, Science and Risk Communication Working Group (ESR).
The initiative was launched by the five participating S&WGs, supported by IAMCR’s Executive Board, in the belief that the association cannot remain blind to the environmental impact that our conferences have, or to the unfortunate exclusions that characterize current conference models. This acknowledgment of our ethical-ecological responsibility is combined with the desire to stimulate the creative opportunities that video presentations can offer to conference presenters.

6/ PARTICIPATORY POLITICS IN AN AGE OF CRISIS CONVERSATION BLOG
From March to June 2019, Henry Jenkins curated a series of conversations about “Participatory Politics in an Age of Crisis", which now can be found at http://henryjenkins.org/archives-html. The conversations series included 21 conversations, concluding with the 5-part conversation between Henry Jenkins and Nico Carpentier.

7/ PCR EVENT IN RIO: Participatory Communication and the Struggle over Human Rights
The international seminar "Participatory Communication and the Struggle Over Human Rights", co-organised by the PCR Section, will be held from 1 to 2 July 2019. The event will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Campus Francisco Negrão de Lima (Maracanã).
The seminar will bring together researchers, activists, and institutions to discuss how participatory communication can extend and deepen the recognition of human rights. Crucial topics within the context of struggle over human rights and participatory communication, such as the relationship of communication and education, communication and human rights, or dialogic/participatory communication and media activism, will be discussed during the event.
The international seminar will be mixed language; hence presentations will be held in English, Portuguese, and Spanish.
