The Multimodal Communication Research (MCR) Working Group was approved by IAMCR's International Council in November 2023. It will organise its first sessions at the 2025 conference.

Multimodal Communication Research (MCR) is an interdisciplinary working group that focuses on innovative and affective modes of knowledge production that move beyond the primacy of words as the only legitimate vehicle for scholarly research pursuits. We welcome projects in any modality (e.g., sound, photography, video, performance, data visualization) that rely upon arts-based methodologies to consider a range of epistemological, theoretical, ethical, and socio-cultural questions central to media and communication research. Our goal is to raise critical conversations about how the field of media and communication studies can embrace multimodal research approaches because each particular form of knowledge production has its own affordances, possibilities, and limitations.
