AI and the Future of Transcultural Communication

An IAMCR Pre-conference

Description

Transcultural Communication is the human practice of transcending cultural barriers, correcting cognitive bias, and building the world with justice and solidarity, which is highly consistent with the main conference theme of IAMCR 2024 - « Whiria Te Tángata – Weaving people together». In the age of artificial intelligence, more digital tools, exemplified by ChatGPT, are developed by both scientific and market players, which has unexpectedly revolutionized the ecology of human communication. It is believed that AI, together with big data, social media, search engines, virtual reality and other platforms, is empowering people to overcome differences, seek commonalities, and create new virtual spaces for multiculturalism and transculturalism. However, as observed in many countries, AI is also widening the digital divide, polarizing voices, consolidating prejudices, and closing the door for intercultural dialogue in the virtual space due to its complex political, economic, and cultural motivations. Therefore, whether AI can assist transcultural communication to build a new global village with justice, inclusiveness, and solidarity is still uncertain. This pre-conference aims to bring together scholars from multidisciplinary backgrounds to discuss the future of transcultural communication with a special focus on the roles and uses of AI.
