Progress and Prospects of Fact-Checking and Media Literacy
An IAMCR pre-conference
In an era dominated by information flows, the challenges of misinformation, the need for effective fact-checking, and the imperative of fostering media literacy have become paramount. As the digital landscape evolves, understanding the dynamics of information dissemination and consumption is crucial for promoting informed societies.
The pre-conference aims to create a platform for rigorous exploration and discussion on the interplay between misinformation, fact-checking, and media literacy. It seeks to delve into the evolving landscape of information in a digital age, where the lines between truth and falsehood are often blurred, emphasizing the role of media literacy in navigating this complex terrain.
We invite scholars, researchers, practitioners, educators, and policymakers to submit papers that contribute to the understanding of misinformation dynamics, showcase effective fact-checking methodologies, and propose innovative approaches to enhance media literacy. The conference aims to facilitate a robust exchange of ideas and insights to address the challenges posed by the evolving information landscape.
Proposals are invited for paper presentations or panels or even hands-on workshops that address one or more of the questions raised above, as well as proposals related more generally to questions concerning fact-checking and media literacy. This may include (but not limited to) topics such as:
- The dynamics of misinformation: Identifying trends and patterns
- Innovations in fact-checking: Tools, technologies, and best practices
- Media literacy education: Strategies for a digitally empowered society
- Fake news and its impact on public opinion
- Case studies in successful fact-checking initiatives
- The psychology of belief: Understanding the spread of misinformation
- Challenges in combating disinformation across different media platforms
- Media literacy across generations: Tailoring approaches for diverse audiences
- The role of technology in amplifying or mitigating misinformation
- Building collaborative networks: Academia, media, and tech industry
The pre-conference call aligns with the overarching theme of the conference, "Weaving People Together," as it underscores the objective of cultivating a collective understanding and resilience amidst the ever-evolving information landscape. This call extends an invitation to participants to delve into the complexities of misinformation, fact-checking, and media literacy, recognizing the challenges presented by the dynamic nature of information dissemination and consumption. Through a collective exploration of these issues, the pre-conference aims to instill a shared purpose among participants—a joint commitment to navigating the intricate realities of the digital age.
