An IAMCR pre-conference

Questions of authenticity have permeated media representations scholarship by addressing the issues of authenticity. Today, with the new accessible applications we are asking the same question. How real are those actors? The goal of this preconference is to establish the seeds of such a large-scale multidisciplinary effort to address the many challenges posed by malicious uses of generative artificial intelligence (genAI), such as AI-generated fake media, misinformation and disinformation, adversarial example attacks on AI systems, and AI-based metamorphic malware in the areas of:

  1. challenges and opportunities of generative AI and misinformation
  2. challenges and opportunities of generative AI and trustworthy news and journalism
  3. challenges and opportunities of generative AI in aiding research
  4. challenges and opportunities of generative AI conceptualizing audience research specifically

Please send an email to with the the following information by 15 March:

  1. 300 word abstract (references excluded) about how your work employs/focuses on (generative) AI in media practices, and how it relates to threats (for lightning talks):
  2. Include a short bio of each author (150 words).
  3. Indicate if you are and IAMCR member (or if you plan to join)
  4. Put "Generative AI and Academic Research" in the heading of the email.

Registration will be required for attendees. The pre-conference has a capacity for up to 60 participants. The registration cost will be communicated at a later stage, and IAMCR members can anticipate a discounted fee.
