On 17 July 2025, at the closing plenary at the Singapore conference of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), the members present condemned the conviction of IAMCR member Bahruz Samadov for high treason by the Azerbaijani courts and the violation of his academic freedom.
The IAMCR members call upon the president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, to release Bahruz Samadov through a presidential pardon, correcting this miscarriage of justice.
