Communication, Information Integrity, Social Justice and Democracy
The CJD WG would like to share a brief note reflecting on its collaboration with entities like the Latin American Association of Community Researchers (ALAIC), the University of Brasilia (UnB), São Paulo State University (UNESP), the Federal University of Santa Catarina (USFC), World Journalism Education Council (WJEC), Brazilian Federation of Scientific and Academic Communication Associations (SOCICOM), Brazilian Society for Interdisciplinary Communication Studies (Intercom), and Ibero-American Organization of Public Defenders (OID), on the Communication, Information Integrity, Social Justice and Democracy World Summer School. Featuring a conglomerate of 118 researchers, professors, 71 graduate students, speakers, moderators and coordinators from 29 countries globally, the summer school took place between the 21st and the 23rd of October.
The course featured six academic panels – such as "Communication, Social Justice and Democracy and Informational Integrity", “Communication, Arts and Democracy" or "Communication, Public Media Service and Community Communication." These were streamed live on YouTube and were similarly accessible to the broader academic community, with engagement facilitated by platform chat features. Alongside these public panels, registered graduate students presented and discussed their research in seven working groups, receiving feedback from professors and fellow researchers. To outline, briefly, the ambitions of the summer school: the initiative strove towards the cultivation of international academic dialogue on contemporary challenges involving communication, democracy, information integrity, and social justice.
As you'll similarly find in our official press release: "The World Summer School approaches communication as a central dimension of democratic processes and struggles for social justice. Its programme addresses disinformation, media and information literacy, digital rights, platform regulation, journalism, public service media, community communication, political polarisation, and inequalities in access to information. Particular attention is given to perspectives from different geographical and epistemological contexts, including the Global South, and to connections between research traditions."
Over the three days, students – within the seven working groups – engaged dialogically, critically and innovatively with their various WG leaders and fellow budding researchers. Alongside this focus on the evolution of their research, they have had the opportunity to develop their research networks, meeting scholars from diverse institutional and cultural environments. The seven working groups were organised according to participants' research interests, allowing students to present their projects, discuss theoretical and methodological approaches, and receive constructive feedback. Alongside this, the critical productions of the Summer School will, in the coming weeks, be organised to coordinate a publication on the basis of the engagee’s scholarly profferings!
We extend our gratitude to all those who have facilitated and participated in the World Summer School “Communication, Information Integrity, Social Justice and Democracy!”

I believe the field grows strongest in these kinds of exchanges between the renowned ones, the sharing of the highlights and the must know, it gives a kind of a base knowledge to share, deepen and discuss, to also opening the field and paving a more clear/broader way to those like me who are now entering and starting to deepen the trajectory in it — Candelaria Ferrara
