The Community Communication and Alternative Media section will host an in-person conference in Galway, Ireland on 29 and 30 May.
The conference is titled ‘Teaching with Love and Hope’, and focuses on how teaching and research related to community and alternative media can help tackle the global rise in racism and intolerance. It is supported by the Office of the Vice-President for EDI at the University of Galway.
Call for Papers
Amidst a global surge in racism and intolerance, how can teaching and research in community and alternative media contribute to countering these harmful trends? This conference seeks to bring together academics, practitioners, and activists to explore how critical engagement with media can foster more inclusive, equitable societies.
We invite submissions that address this urgent topic, including:
- Academic papers investigating the role of media in promoting or countering racism and intolerance.
- Case studies showcasing the impact of community and alternative media in amplifying marginalized voices.
- Presentations on practical interventions and strategies for educators, media practitioners, and community organizers.
This conference offers a unique opportunity to engage in critical dialogue, share innovative practices, and build networks of solidarity. Sessions will feature a mix of traditional academic panels, interactive workshops, and field trips to projects that exemplify media’s potential for positive social change.
