Urgent Call for Investigation of Attack on Community Radio in France

French below

(20 May 2020) IAMCR has been informed that a radio station supported by AMARC Europe, the umbrella organisation for community radio in Europe and a leading NGO in the field of community expression, has been subjected to a violent attack from far-right militants.

AMARC Europe reports that on Sunday 10th May 2020 a group of masked persons forced their way into the premises of Radio d'Ici, the local community radio station and long-term AMARC Europe member, in Saint-Julien-Molin-Molette, Department Loire, France, vandalised the studio, destroyed sound and recording equipment, and painted fascist and white supremacist symbols on the walls.

IAMCR joins AMARC Europe in their demand for a full investigation into the incident by the French government, for appropriate sanctions to be imposed, and for the resources the station needs to resume broadcasting to be provided as rapidly as possible.

Participatory media play an indispensable role in providing a platform for voices within local communities. IAMCR is fully committed to the protection and promotion of diversity of expression and the communicative rights of marginalised and underrepresented groups.

IAMCR wishes to draw attention to the growing momentum behind attacks and curbs on independent and alternative media from the far right across Europe and beyond. These attacks present a fundamental challenge to freedom of information and pluralism of expression and must be opposed wherever they occur.
