IAMCR @ ICA2012

ica_logoEvery year IAMCR sponsors a panel at the conference of the International Communication Association (ICA).

This year ICA's conference was held in Phoenix, Arizona from 24 to 28 May and the IAMCR panel was held on Friday 25 May with the title "Critical approaches to Communication and Community".

Stefania Milan, chair and presenter on the panel, sent the following note:

The panel was organized by IAMCR President Annabelle Sreberny and showcased some of IAMCR's  research in the area of community and communication (the theme of this year's ICA conference). I had the honour of chairing it. Among the highlights of the session, former IAMCR President Cees Hamelink reminded us that 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the collaboration between IAMCR and ICA, which was inaugurated by a joint event held at the 1992 IAMCR conference in Guarujá, São Paulo, Brazil. To refresh your memory and to learn more about this important anniversary, check out "IAMCR in Retrospect: A brief history by Cees  Hamelink & Kaarle Nordenstreng". You can find it on IAMCR's website. (link to http://iamcr.org/iamcr-in-retrospect)

Papers and participants to the IAMCR@ICA panel included:

  • Mediatized Worlds: A Social World Perspective on Communities with reference to communication
Friedrich Lothar Krotz, University of Bremen, Germany
  • Notions of Community in Times of Social Media
Stefania Milan, University of Toronto, and Arne Hintz, McGill University
  • From Community Media to Media Communities: Can a Medium be a Community?
Hillel Nossek, College of Management Academic Studies, Israel

We spotted many other IAMCR members in the ICA 2012 program, a confirmation of how lively and active our association is.

In July it will be IAMCR's turn to host its world conference in Durban, South Africa, where ICA will also sponsor a session.

See you in Durban!
