Visual Culture Working group has been contributing to soliciting new ideas and creative views to examine problems with the world communication system particularly from the perspective of non-Western alternatives. We have been involved in creating arguments on dynamic changes in visual art, cinema, visual media and new technology in Asia, South America and Africa in addition to changes in European and North American visual media. We welcome theoretical and practical research agenda related to visual culture. We are particularly encouraging panel proposals in relation to the main theme of this year’s conference.

The prospective themes of Visual Culture Working Group sessions would be as follows though we would not exclude any other themes related to visual cultures.

  • Collective memory and visual communication
  • Cultural studies of visual media
  • History of visual culture
  • Visual communication of new technology and social media
  • Visual art and aesthetics
  • Sociological and anthropological research on visual communication
  • Cinema studies
  • Theoretical and methodological issues in visual communication

Deadlines

The deadline for submission of abstracts is 15 February 2016. The OCS system will close at midnight GMT on 15 February 2016.

Decisions on acceptance of abstracts will be communicated to applicants no later than 1 April 2016.

Conference registration will be open in March 2016.

For those whose abstracts are accepted, full conference papers are to be submitted by 30 June 2016.

Guidance of abstract submission

  • Abstracts should be between 300-500 words.
  • Names of the authors, professional titles, institutional affiliations, email address should be included.
  • The title should be clearly marked
  • Abstracts should be submitted via the OCS system, not to the head of sections.

It is expected that for the most part, only one (1) abstract will be submitted per person for consideration by the Conference. However, under no circumstances should there be more than two (2) abstracts bearing the name of the same applicant either individually or as part of any group of authors. Please note also that the same abstract or another version with minor variations in title or content must not be submitted to other Sections or Working Groups of the Association for consideration, after an initial submission. Such submissions will be deemed to be in breach of the conference guidelines and will be automatically rejected by the Open Conference System, by the Head or by the Conference Program Reviewer. Such applicants risk being removed entirely from the conference program.

Upon submission of an abstract, you will be asked to confirm that your submission is original and that it has not been previously published in the form presented. You will also be given an opportunity to declare if your submission is currently before another conference for consideration.

Criteria for Evaluation

Submitted abstracts will generally be evaluated on the basis of:

  1. theoretical contribution
  2. methods
  3. quality of writing
  4. literature review
  5. relevance of the submission to the work of the Section or Working Group
  6. originality and/or significance of the work
