International Day to End Impunity

International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

UNESCO says IDEI is an opportunity for teachers and students of journalism to undertake special projects and has created a dedicated site on the issue.

In 2013 the United Nations proclaimed November 2 as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI). In the past decade 700 journalists have been killed for reporting the news and bringing information to the public: on average one death every week. In nine out of ten cases the killers go unpunished. UNESCO warns that impunity damages whole societies by covering up serious human rights abuses, corruption, and crime.

The IDEI presents an opportunity to raise awareness on this issue among the public and the media and UNESCO has suggested that it could be an opportunity for teachers and students of communication and journalism to undertake special projects. If you teach communication or journalism and would like to use the opportunity to raise the issue with your students, please be advised that UNESCO has a dedicated site on the issue at http://www.unesco.org/new/en/endimpunity. The site features background materials including a selection of facts and figures and quotes on the issue and links to the websites of related institutions and resources.
