Statement

If we want to influence the discipline of media and communication, and in the extension our own communities, and the world at large, we need to build a discipline as well as organization underpinned by equity, diversity, and inclusion centred on critical intellectual inquiry that expands and charters new directions in the discipline. Through its many programmes, conferences, interventions, and partnerships, the IAMCR stand at the heart of these efforts. In doing so, our mission and global engagement should centre and actively seek to address global grand challenges, encourage science without borders, and actively drive the inclusion and development of a truly global scholarship mindful of hegemonies, exclusion and inequities that continue to shape research and research impact. To support and drive such a mission, I bring my experience from having researched and taught media and communication at a diverse set of institutions for the last 20 years. I also bring my experience from university management most recently as the head of the division for global engagement at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, where among other things, I have been driving and promoting an international research agenda and international partnerships underpinned by equity, diversity and inclusion.

I fully endorse Prof Ylva-Rodny Gumede for the IAMCR International Council, I have been reading her scholarship since I was a PhD student and have found her work to be strongly underpinned by a social justice imperative that seeks to address inequalities, intersectionalities, injustices, and diversities in various areas of the media within a diversity of geo-spatial locations such as Global, Global South, Decolonial, as well as African perspectives. In this regard, Prof Ylva is a well- respected scholar that also exhibits a strong conviction and work ethic to internationalize, decolonize, and Africanize student experiences, curriculums as well as Higher education institutions.
