AI Inequalities: Critical praxis for digital inclusion

An IAMCR pre-conference

Description

Artificial intelligence is increasingly part and parcel of our lives, permeating all aspects of society and everyday life. From unlocking our phones, scrolling through social media, writing emails, using google search, navigating to our destination or curating a music playlist, our reliance on these technologies is ever-present whether recognised or not. These same acts, however, can embed inequalities and biases in artificial intelligence. These can range from training datasets that lack diversity to the algorithms at play, and inherent disability, racial, and gendered biases, as well as to questions of access and planetary cost of using artificial intelligence. Amidst this growing trend of artificial intelligence permeating our everyday lives, there is an urgent need to critically reflect how as a society we can begin to unravel its workings, and to effect new forms of inclusive and sustainable practice.
