Political Communication Research Section - Call for Papers 2020

The call for papers below is an extraordinary reopening of the original Beijing call for papers for authors who did not submit to the Beijing conference but want their work considered for Tampere.

The Political Communication Research Section of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) invites the submission of abstracts of papers and proposals for panels for the 2020 Congress of the Association, which will be held from 12 to 16 July, 2020 at Tampere University in Tampere. Submissions for this extraordinary reopening will be accepted from Monday 17 February, 2020 until Monday 2 March 2020 at 23:59 UTC

IAMCR conferences address many diverse topics defined by our 33 thematic sections and working groups. We also propose a single central theme to be explored throughout the conference with the aim of generating and exploring multiple perspectives in plenary sessions and in some of the sessions of the sections and working groups. The general conference theme for 2020 is “Reimagining the Digital Future: Building Inclusiveness, Respect and Reciprocity”.

See the IAMCR 2020 general call for proposals.

Submissions can refer to political communication research aspects of the general conference theme, Reimagining the Digital Future: Building Inclusiveness, Respect and Reciprocity, or to the specific interests of the Political Communication Research Section. The 2020 conference theme addresses many topics in the field of political communication research, for instance the integrative power of mediated political communication or opportunities to foster the dialogue between political leaders and citizens.

Additionally, proposals on all aspects of political communication are welcome. For example, works on the interplay of politics and media, interdependencies of both fields, political campaigning and socialization, political participation or the relationship between intermediaries like interest groups and political parties, governments and institutions.

The section also invites contributions on political marketing, media effects of political discourses and the role of digital media and communication channels in political communication. Comparative approaches across countries and cultural borders are particularly welcome to reveal differences and commonalities as well as possible transcultural transformations of political communication.

Languages

Submissions can be made in any of the three official IAMCR languages (English, French, Spanish). Given the international nature of the conference the section strongly encourages accepted authors to present their work in the English language.

Submission Guidelines

It is expected that authors will submit only one (1) abstract. However, under no circumstances should there be more than two (2) abstracts bearing the name of the same author, either individually or as part of any group of authors. No more than one (1) abstract can be submitted to any section or working group. Please note also that the same abstract or another version with minor variations in title or content must not be submitted to more than one section or working group. Any such submissions will be deemed to be in breach of the conference guidelines and will be rejected. Authors submitting them risk being removed entirely from the conference programme.

It is expected that presenters bring a fully developed work to the conference. Prior to the conference, it is expected that a completed paper will be submitted via the IAMCR conference website which will be available for the section members and to the session chairs.

Abstracts should be between 250 and 500 words, and should:

  • have a clear title
  • include the name(s) of author(s) and professional title(s) (i.e. professor, postdoctoral fellow, independent researcher, graduate student, student, etc.)
  • outline the research objectives/questions/hypotheses
  • outline the theoretical framework and methodology if relevant
  • make clear the main argument proposed and
  • summarize the findings and thus indicate whether the study has been completed or when it is going to be completed.

Please do not include bibliographies or author profiles.

All abstracts must be submitted at https://iamcr2020.exordo.com. Abstracts sent by email will not be accepted.

To foster scientific discussions and strengthen international networking, the section chairs expect authors of accepted papers to participate in the conference in person and present their papers themselves. Paper presentations by anyone other than the authors will not be accepted.

If accepted presenters cannot come to the conference, the section chairs must be notified in order to give other scholars the chance to present their work.

Integration of Early Career Scholars and practitioners

The Section Chairs plan to support early-career scholars (students and pre-docs) at the beginning of their professional careers. Therefore, the chairs especially encourage pre-docs and students not only to submit their own proposals but also to actively participate in the conference as panel chairs. Many universities and institutions give travel grants to early career researchers in the case if they actively participate in an event. If you are interested in this activity and in networking and discussing with colleagues from all parts of the world, please do not hesitate and contact the section chairs.

The Political Communication Research Section encourages its members to take part in chairing sessions. In case you are interested in this activity, please contact the section chairs.

The deadline to submit abstracts is 23:59 GMT on 2 March 2020
