Statement

I am currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and in the Postgraduate Program in Communication of the Federal Fluminense University (UFF), Brazil. I am also a Professor and in the Postgraduate Program in Communication of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), Brazil.

I am a member of the National Institute of Science and Technology in Information Disputes and Sovereignties (INCT/DSI), a large consortium of international researchers funded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) in Brazil.

Since 2017, I have been the head of the research group GEIST (Group of Studies in Images, Sonorities, and Technologies), which is associated with the CNPq. GEIST works as a network of researchers from Brazil and other countries.

I have been an active member of IAMCR since 2015, participating in several activities promoted by the Digital Divide, Visual Culture, and Music Audio Radio and Sound working groups. I believe that I can contribute to increase the participation of communication scholars from the Global South, to expand the network of knowledge exchange between scientific institutions in different countries, and to deepen the notion of epistemic sovereignty, which is so important in a multicultural academic community like IAMCR.

Nominated by:

Andrea Medrado, University of Westminster, UK

José Cláudio has been an active member of IAMCR many years. Recently he became an IAMCR Ambassador for Brazil. He is hard working, collegial, well-connected and keen to act as a bridge between scholars in all stages of the academic career in Latin America, the US and many other countries.
