Topic
In an era characterized by environmental crises and social disparities, the imperative for effective communication in promoting environmental justice has never been more urgent. The IAMCR Singapore conference theme, Communicating Environmental Justice: Many Voices, One Planet, highlighted the critical intersection of diverse voices from various stakeholders and their collaborative action in addressing the pressing challenges of our time.
This edited volume, inspired by the engaging discussions at the 2025 IAMCR Conference, invites scholars to explore the multifaceted nature of environmental justice from an organisational communication perspective. It aims to examine contemporary communication practices in evolving interactions between organizations and stakeholders on issues related to environmental sustainability.
Organisations are being forced by technological evolutions and affordances; growing stakeholder power, consciousness of organisational impacts and demand for environmental action; and growing regulatory attention to adopt more sustainable practices. Importantly, the growing recognition for, uptake and influence of AI in messaging have complicated the dynamics of authenticity in conversations around the environment challenge. These developments prompt critical questions, including:
- How do communication and decision-making processes facilitate the adoption of environmentally sustainable actions?
- Who initiates and shapes conversations about environmental sustainability?
- What roles do ethics, leadership, and change management play in fostering environmentally responsible practices?
- What are the outcomes of climate-related dialogues within organizations?
- How prevalent are greenwashing and other forms of superficial environmental claims?
- What is the influence of AI on dialogic communication and ethical issues on environmental issues
- What is the societal impact of environmental rhetoric and storytelling?
- Who are the key actors debating climate issues within organizational boundaries?
- What activist roles do organizations assume in addressing the climate crisis?
- How do organizations from developing countries contribute to conversations on climate justice?
We call authors with completed research presented at the Organisational Communication sessions at the 2025 IAMCR Conference as well as other scholars interested in these topics, to submit a chapter related to their studies. International perspectives are encouraged, as are both theoretical and empirical works from different methodological perspectives.
