Communication for Development (C4D) contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals

Learning from research supported by the UNICEF/IAMCR C4D Fund

The UNICEF/IAMCR Communication for Development (C4D) Research Fund, established in 2019, supports small research initiatives that advance our understanding of how C4D contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Projects supported by the Fund feed into the work of Global Alliance for Social and Behaviour Change (GA4SBC). 

In this webinar, after a brief overview of the IAMCR/UNICEF C4D Research Fund and the work of the GA4SBC, the 2021 UNICEF/IAMCR C4D Research Fund awardees will present their research, which will be responded to by academics and practitioners. The awarded projects are:

  • ‘Empowering adolescent girls through digital interventions in rural Rajasthan: A case study of Girls Effect’s Chhaa Jaa (Go Forth and Shine) programme’ by Sneh Gupta and Kulveen Trehan, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, India.
  • ‘Trust and mistrust in a pandemic: evaluation of acceptance of COVID-19 communication tools in use in Nigeria’ by Solomon Oyeleye and Ifedolapo Ademosu, Caleb University, Nigeria.

Who can participate: IAMCR members and non-members, as well as GA4SBC members/affiliates are invited to participate. The event is free but space is limited.

Speakers bios: 

Sneh Gupta is a senior research fellow, pursuing her Ph.D. at University School of Mass Communication, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi in India. She did her Master’s in Advertising and Public Relations from the prestigious Indian Institution of Mass Communication, (IIMC) New Delhi and worked as a communication professional across media spectrum ranging from New Media Advocacy, Digital Public Relations, Campaign/Programme Planning, and Policy Evaluation Research in various capacities. A gender advocate who believes in the potential of new media in advancing the UN SDG-5 targets, she has actively worked on gender advocacy campaigns like #LahuKaLagaan and #VisibleWikiWomen among others and presented papers internationally at conferences in USA, UK, and Asia.

Kulveen Trehan is a Senior Assistant Professor at University School of Mass Communication, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Govt. of NCT of Delhi. Her work on creative communication, popular culture, digital advocacy, sports communication and advertising literacy has been published in reputed international journals and books.  Her recent research projects are centered around SDGs, media literacy, advocacy and creative executions. She is currently involved in a research project funded by UNICEF & IAMCR on C4D. She was part of the team that prepared the Global report on Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo 2020.

Solomon Oyeleye worked as a journalist for over 20 years before joining the Department of Mass Communication, Caleb University, Imota, Lagos state as faculty member. He holds a PhD in Development Communication from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan. He has consulted for the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health and UNICEF on Advocacy and Social Mobilization for Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS (PMTCT) and also for United Nations Population Fund on Advocacy Material Development for Reproductive Health Commodity Security/Maternal Health.

Ifedolapo Ademosu is on the Faculty at the Department of Mass Communication, Caleb University, Imota, in Lagos State, and a PhD candidate at the Department of Communication Studies, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun state.  Her thesis is on ‘Deconstruction of Environmental Communication Programs on Nigerian Television Stations in South West Nigeria. Her professional experience spans Advertising/Marketing Communications, Business Consulting and Book Publishing.
