1/ PCR AT IAMCR 2025: SESSIONS AND SURPRISES

The Participatory Communication Research (PCR) Section is excited to present key highlights for IAMCR 2025, taking place in Singapore from 13 to 17 July 2025. This year, PCR offers collaborative sessions and unique opportunities for scholarly exchange.

Joint Sessions:

The PCR section has planned three joint sessions:

  1. PCR / CAM Joint Session: Exploring participatory communication and alternative media for inclusivity and social change.
  2. PCR / HEC Joint Session: Investigating participatory methods in health advocacy and equity.
  3. PCR / ESN Joint Session: A mentorship-oriented platform for early-career researchers and seasoned scholars to discuss innovative participatory approaches.

New Books and Special Issues Session

A dedicated session will highlight new books and Special Issues of journals published in the past year, fostering engagement with recent developments in participatory communication.

"Key Notes" Session

The PCR section will host a participatory "Key Notes" session towards the end of the conference to reflect on major learnings, best practices, and insights from PCR members, enriching dialogues on the future of the section.

The deadline for abstract submissions is 7 February 2025. We encourage you to submit your important and innovative work to PCR and contribute to this vibrant academic discourse!


2/ REMINDER: SUBMISSION DEADLINE SUBMIT BEFORE 7 FEBRUARY 2025

The deadline for abstract submissions for IAMCR Singapore 2025 is 7 February 2025. This year’s theme, “Communicating Environmental Justice: Many Voices, One Planet,” calls for diverse and thought-provoking contributions.

We encourage submissions to the Participatory Communication Research (PCR) Section. Not all submissions need to address the central theme, but the following suggested areas align with PCR’s focus and the conference theme:

  • Advances in participatory research: methods and theories
  • AI as a transformative agent for participation
  • Community and citizen-centred planetary stewardship: agency and participation
  • Creative participation and pluriversality: participatory arts, storytelling, and performative interventions
  • Indigenous communication systems, cosmologies, and participation
  • Navigating the nature/culture relationship (more-than-human) for participatory communication
  • Participation for environmental and social justice, advocacy, and activism
  • Participatory media: voice and social change
  • Public policy, participation, and environmental governance
  • Resilience and participation

3/ IAMCR AWARDS

IAMCR 2025 offers prestigious awards and grants, including travel grants for early-career scholars from low and middle-income countries, and awards recognizing excellence in climate change, urban, and rural communication services. Other honours include the Stuart Hall Award for critical work and the Decolonising the Digital Award for innovative insights into global digital dynamics. Abstracts are due by 7 February 2025, and final papers by March or April, depending on the award. For details, visit: IAMCR Awards.

IAMCR Singapore 2025 is currently accepting abstract submissions!

5/ OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS

Communication and Social Change (CSC) Hub Studentship – Loughborough University London

Loughborough University London invites applications for a funded PhD studentship focused on communication and social change. The 3-year studentship offers a £21,237 tax-free stipend per annum and tuition fee coverage. Research areas include planetary futures, digital justice, and corporatisation of social change.
