In the July 2018 edition of the Chinese Journal of Journalism & Communication, a 14-page long interview with Nico Carpentier on participatory communication has been published. The interviewers were Piyu Gong, Jinsheng Zhang, Yanglong Zhan, and Haonan Chi.
From the perspective of participatory communication, Nico Carpentier discusses participatory communication and the relationship between participatory communication and new media, political participation, political communication and state governance. Participation is seen not only to raise issues about the relationships between the state and its citizens, but also about the relations between cultural and educational institutions and the citizenry. Moreover, the argument is made to analyze the Chinese political reform project "More of governance, less of ruling" from the angle of participatory communication.
