0/NEW YEAR'S WISHES

The PCR Section management, Nico Carpentier, Ana Duarte Melo and Jonas Agerbæk Jeppesen wish all members and friends of the IAMCR PCR Section a wonderful 2019. May this year become, against the odds, a year of democracy, peace and ... participation.

------------------------------------------

1/PARTICIPATORY COMMUNICATION RESEARCH SECTION CALL 2019

The PCR Section calls for abstract submissions for the 2019 IAMCR conference, which will be held from 7 to 11 July, 2019 at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain.

The deadline for abstract submissions is 8 February 2019.

Proposals for individual abstracts and panel presentations are both welcome and early submission is strongly encouraged. We kindly ask you to submit proposals in good time at the abstract submission site – https://iamcr-ocs.org.

We welcome, in particular, submissions to the PCR Section, whose remit is to explore the theory and practice of participatory communication. The PCR Section addresses issues related to communication processes within the local, regional, national or international spheres and the ways in which communication, information and/or media foster social change through participation. The PCR Section has traditionally accommodated creative approaches to participatory communication, the section has, over recent years, intentionally encouraged interdisciplinary methods marked by critique and innovation.

This year’s conference theme allows the PCR Section an opportunity to highlight that participation is a human right, and should be acknowledged as such. This implies that this year, even more than before, the right to communicate will be placed in the PCR Section’s spotlight, as a key materialization of, and guarantee for, human dignity.

2/PCR SECTION CALL FOR VIDEO PRESENTATIONS

For the 2019 IAMCR conference (7 to 11 July 2019 in Madrid, Spain) the PCR Section also calls for video presentations.

This joint initiative, with 4 other IAMCR sections and working groups, allows IAMCR members to present their work at the Madrid 2019 conference by using a pre-recorded video. Authors of accepted of video presentations will benefit from a reduced registration fee, which has been set at 50% of the normal fee for participants in the same category and country income level (if the presenter doesn’t attend the conference, of course).

Submissions of proposals for video presentations will follow the regular procedures for submitting proposals to the IAMCR conference. This means that abstracts must be submitted before or on 8 February 2019. We ask you to kindly submit proposals in good time at the abstract submission site – https://iamcr-ocs.org.

A more elaborate explanation can be found at https://iamcr.org/s-wg/section/PCR/videos-2019.

Moreover, to assist (potential) video presenters, a "Technical note for IAMCR conference video presentations" has been produced, which can be found here: https://iamcr.org/madrid2019/video-technical-note

3/PCR EBOOK "PARTICIPAD" PUBLISHED

The PCR Section is happy to announce that "ParticipAD - Participatory advertising: a global perspective with a Latin American focus / Publicidad participativa: Una perspectiva global con un enfoque latinoamericano" has been published.

The book is open access, and can be downloaded from this link:

The direct link to the pdf version of the book is:
http://lasics.uminho.pt/ojs/index.php/cecs_ebooks/article/download/3011/2916

The ebook came out of a PCR pre-conference in Bogota, and was edited by Ana Duarte Melo and Marcela Duque. Both English and Spanish are used, and the ebook combines contributions from researchers, advertising professionals and activists.

What is ParticipAD?
ParticipAD, short for Participatory Advertising, is a concept based on the participatory and interventionist potential of advertising. This book presents critical reflections as well as cases of alternative uses of advertising, whether as a system, a modus operandi or simply as a code, for purposes other than the conventional profit, revenue and economic drivers, focusing instead on its participatory scope, as a tool for peace, social change and citizenship.

7/INTERVIEW PUBLISHED IN COMMUNIQUER

Communiquer, the Revue de Communication Sociale et Publique / the Journal of Social and Public Communication, published an interview with Nico Carpentier, entitled "Stretching the Frontiers of Communication and Media Studies". The journal simultaneously published a French translation of this interview ("Étirer les frontières des études sur les communications et les médias"). The interview was conducted by David Grondin.

In this interview, Nico Carpentier discusses the significance of disciplinary dialogue within and beyond what he calls the “discipline/field” of communication and media studies. Throughout this interview, he also gives access to his most recent research. These seek to highlight the empirical case of the Island of Cyprus ongoing conflicts, by analyzing the discursive-material knot of a participatory-agonistic assemblage (a community radio station).

Both the French and the English version of the interview are available in open access at:
