IAMCR 2021 Awards

IAMCR will make several awards and grants available to its members in 2021: the UCF/IAMCR Urban Communication Research Grant, the IAMCR 2021 award in memory of Stuart Hall, and the Climate Communication Research Award.

Call for Nominations

Nominations are now open for candidates for IAMCR’s Executive Board (president, two (2) vice presidents, secretary general and treasurer), and fifteen (15) members of the International Council. Nominations close on March 17, 2020, 23:59 UTC.

Media & gender on CSW agenda

The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), celebrating its 61st session at UN Headquarters in New York from 13-24 March, has selected gender and media as its review theme for its 62nd session in 2018. The 2018 review will examine the “participation in and access of women to the media, and information and communication technologies and their impact on and use as an instrument for the advancement and empowerment of women”.

What is life?

IAMCR is co-sponsoring the seventh annual “What is…?" conference. The 2017 version will focus on What is life and how is life mediated? It will take place at the University of Oregon in Portland, Oregon, USA from 6-8 April, 2017.

IAMCR election results announced

In a message sent to all IAMCR members on 14 June, the Election Committee announced the results of elections for the association's Executive Board and International Council. Janet Wasko was reelected president and will be joined on the Executive Board by 2 vice-presidents, Graham Murdock and Aimée Vega, a secretary general, Gerard Goggin and a treasurer, Anthony Moretti. Fifteen members were elected to the International Council, which is made up of the 15 elected members plus the heads of IAMCR's 15 thematic sections.

Women make the news March 8

On the occasion of International Women's Day, IAMCR will once again join UNESCO and the Global Alliance on Media and Gender (GAMAG) in the annual Women Make the News (WMN) initiative. This year's theme is Gender Equality in the Media is Sustainable Development: Gender Equality in the Media by 2030.

Report on IAMCR India conference

An IAMCR conference on news literacy, organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Surendranath College for Women, Kolkata, India was held on January 18, 2016. An initiative of Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey, IAMCR's ambassador in India, the conference was attended by more than 150 participants from all parts of India.

IAMCR at GAMAG

The IAMCR Task Force for GAMAG will actively participate at both the International Development Cooperation Meeting on Gender and Media and the First GAMAG General Assembly, to be held at Palais des Nations, Geneva, 7-10 December.

CfP - IAMCR 2016

IAMCR invites submissions of abstracts for papers and panel proposals for the 2016 IAMCR conference to be held from 27 -31 July, 2016 in Leicester, UK. The conference theme is Memory, Commemoration and Communication: Looking Back, Looking Forward.

IAMCR 2016 conference in Leicester

The 2016 conference of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) will be held at the University of Leicester in the UK from July 27-31, 2016. The date coincides with the 50th anniversary celebrations of Leicester's Department of Media and Communication, founded in 1966 as the Centre for Mass Communication Research.

Gender & Media Forum

IAMCR is cooperating with the Centre for Interdisclipinary Research in Science and Humanities of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to organise the International Forum on Gender, Media, ICTs, and Journalism: 20 years after the Beijing Action Platform. The forum will be held in Mexico City on May 27 and 28.

IAMCR & GAMAG

IAMCR was represented at the first meeting of the International Steering Committee of the Global Alliance for Media and Gender (GAMAG) by its president, Janet Wasko, and vice-president, Aimée Vega.

IAMCR & GAPMIL

IAMCR will participate in the First European Forum on Media and Information Literacy, a joint effort with UNESCO and the European Commission, within the framework of the Global Alliance for Partnerships in Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL).

IAMCR supports Turkish scholars

On 8 March 2014, a group of research assistants from Istanbul's Marmara University Faculty of Communication issued a statement to protest against the decision to expel two research assistants, Dr. Figen Algul and Can Ozbasaran from the Faculty, to penalise eight research assistants with a promotional suspension for 24 months and to implement a wage-cut in one case. These measures were taken in response to the research assistants joining the strike action organised by KESK (the Confederation of Public Workers’ Union) in June, which was related to the Gezi Park protests. The Higher Education Council of Turkey (YOK) still needs to confirm the expulsion.

Institutions can name free student members

Institutional members of IAMCR can now name up to ten (10) PhD students as members of the Association at no additional cost. IAMCR president, Janet Wasko, says the new policy is good for everyone: “Institutional members gain visibility and provide a service to their students, the students get the experience of being part of a worldwide professional association that can help expand their networks and their horizons, and IAMCR will benefit from the injection of new ideas and perspectives that are essential to keeping the association vital.”

Remembering Karol Jakubowicz

On 29 June 2013 IAMCR organised a special session at its IAMCR Dublin conference to commemorate Karol Jakubowicz.

Karol was a communications scholar and a longtime friend of IAMCR and many of its members. He passed away last April 28.

The session was entitled Remembering Karol Jakubowicz: Scholar, Policymaker and Friend, and included statements from Jo Bardoel, Epp Lauk, Kaarle Nordenstreng, Jan Servaes, Brenda Dervin, François Heinderyckx and Tarlach McGonagle.

IAMCR protests the closing of Greek public service broadcaster

ERTIAMCR President, Janet Wasko, sent a letter to Antonis Samaras, Prime Minister of Greece, regarding the sudden closure of the public service broadcaster, ERT. In her letter she underlined the importance of public service media in democratic societies and urged the prime minister to "immediately reverse this decision, allowing Greek and other affected citizens living in the country and abroad to receive independent and quality information in this important period in Greek history."

IAMCR @ ICA on 20 June

As is customary, IAMCR will host a special panel at the International Communication Association (ICA) annual conference. This year's panel will focus on the theme of IAMCR's own conference that begins in Dublin on 25 June, a short distance and a few days away.

“Crises, ‘Creative Destruction’ and the Global Power and Communication Orders”, the Dublin theme and the title of the panel, centres on whether and how the current economic crisis and its attendant gales of "creative destruction" may serve to reshape geo-political and communication orders.

Call for proposals to hold future IAMCR conferences

IAMCR logoThe IAMCR Executive Board and International Council will consider proposals for hosting and organization of future IAMCR conferences from 2015 onwards. Expressions of interest should be submitted to the Executive Board by June 17, 2013. IAMCR conferences are major opportunities to show the know-how and promote the activities of the organizing institution(s) and to foster the energy and creativity around a large international project.

Karol Jakubowicz

photo - mediapolicy.orgIt is with deep sorrow that we report the death of Polish professor and journalist Karol Jakubowicz, who passed away April 28th.

Karol was an active IAMCR member for many years and contributed greatly to our meetings and discussions. He was a leading expert on European media and held many prominent positions. He led committees on media issues at the Council of Europe and UNESCO, and served as Director of the Polish Television. Karol was also an adviser on broadcast media laws to governments, NGOs and international organizations, including the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.

We are currently discussing a memorial session commemorating Karol's work at the IAMCR Dublin conference.

IAMCR joins Women Make the News 2013

On the occasion of International Women’s Day (8 March), IAMCR joins UNESCO and other international and regional media organizations to launch the annual Women Make the News (WMN) initiative, under the theme “Towards a Global Alliance on Media and Gender”.

We are inviting editors-in-chief of newspapers, radio, television on and offline to join UNESCO’s initiative, and to produce special supplements/programmes on these topics and/or to entrust women journalists and reporters with editorial responsibility for the newsroom for a limited period over the duration of the WMN initiative.

New journal of the Political Economy Section

altThe Political Economy Section of IAMCR is establishing a new journal with the first issue to be published on 1 May 2013. Political Economy of Communication will be an online open access academic publication.

The journal will publish peer reviewed articles that are delivered within the Political Economy section's sessions at IAMCR conferences. The journal is also open, in special cases, to ground-breaking contributions from non-section members.

IAMCR 2012 election results

altThe results of the elections for IAMCR's Executive Board and for the elected members of the association's International Council have been announced. The International Council also includes one representative of each of the association's fifteen sections. Their names will be announced later.

The new Executive Board and International Council held their first meetings on 20 July.

Mapping Communication Associations

ecrea_iamcr_icaECREA, IAMCR and ICA have launched a joint online inventory of communication associations worldwide. All communication associations are invited to create an entry in the database.

As more associations make themselves known, the database will gradually grow into the first ever searchable database of communication associations. At this stage, the database is publicly accessible and can be navigated either by browsing or using keywords.

The "Mapping Communication Associations" website is hosted by Université Libre de Bruxelles and can be found here.

IAMCR @ ICA2012

ica_logoEvery year IAMCR sponsors a panel at the conference of the International Communication Association (ICA).

This year ICA's conference was held in Phoenix, Arizona from 24 to 28 May and the IAMCR panel was held on Friday 25 May with the title "Critical approaches to Communication and Community".

Deadline approaching for IAMCR Urban Communication Prize

urban_communicationIAMCR and the Urban Communication Foundation offer an annual prize for the best paper by an IAMCR member that critically addresses issues in urban communication. This year's prize will be awarded at IAMCR's conference in Durban, South Africa to an original paper which shows scholarly excellence in critical and innovative engagement with issues in urban communication.

The deadline for submission of papers for the 2012 prize is 10 June.

Open Access Journals

In recent years free, on line journals, many of them open access and peer-reviewed, have begun to both challenge and complement traditional academic publishing. This is a welcome development and IAMCR is developing a resource on its website with links to journals in the field of media and communications. Unless otherwise mentioned, these journals are not affiliated with IAMCR.

IAMCR joins Women Make the News 2012

WMNOn the occasion of International Women’s Day (8 March), IAMCR joins UNESCO and other international and regional media organizations to celebrate the annual Women Make the News (WMN) initiative. WMN is a global policy advocacy initiative aimed at promoting gender equality in the media.

The theme for this year, Rural women’s access to media and information, seeks to underscore and stimulate knowledge exchange on: the importance of policies in favour of access to media and information in rural communities, particularly for women; and good practices undertaken by public service broadcasters, commercial and community media, and NGOs.

IAMCR 2012 General Call for Proposals

erythrina_caffraThe International Association for Media and Communication Research invites submissions of abstracts for papers and panel proposals for the 2012 IAMCR conference to be held from July 15-19, 2012 at the Howard College Campus of the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) in Durban, South Africa.

The conference will be held under the general theme, 'South-North Conversations'. The theme reflects the asymmetry of global communication flows, but without implying the negatives that usually accompany discussions of the 'digital divide'. The theme also calls for balanced and empowering narratives that do not regard those in ‘the South’ as victims primarily in need of handouts from the more affluent.

The deadline for submissions is February 14, 2012.

Hopeton Dunn Reappointed as Chairman of the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica

hdunn_smIAMCR Secretary General, Hopeton Dunn, has been reappointed for a second five-year term as chairman of the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica, the regulatory body for radio, television, and cable TV in Jamaica.

In addition to his position with IAMCR, Professor Dunn is director of the Telecommunications Policy and Management programme at the Mona School of Business, University of the West Indies (UWI) and professor of Communications Policy and Digital Media at the UWI.
