November 2020 - This letter was sent by Nico Carpentier, IAMCR President, to thank IAMCR members for their support in 2020 and to invite them to renew their membership for 2021.

In alignment with the possibilities offered by the COVID-19 pandemic, IAMCR 2021’s conference will offer multiple modalities for participation. It will be an online conference with an African “hub” at USIU-Africa, and satellite activities at various points around the globe.

In this letter to the members, IAMCR's newly elected president, Nico Carpentier, reflects on IAMCR's 2020 conference and the opportunities and challenges raised by the events of 2020.

The elections for IAMCR Executive Board (EB) and International Council (IC) are over. Nico Carpentier was elected president and will be joined on the Executive Board by 2 vice-presidents, Andrea Medrado and Usha Raman, the current secretary general, Gerard Goggin, and treasurer, Elske van de Fliert, who have both been reelected.

The IAMCR 2020 online conference will begin on 12 July with an opening plenary with welcoming words from IAMCR's Executive Board and the conference host, Tampere University, plus keynote speakers reflecting on the conference theme.

This month IAMCR holds elections for the Executive Board and International Council. The online voting period will run from 11 May to 31 May 2020. All current members are eligible to vote, including those who take out or renew their IAMCR membership until Wednesday, 27 May.

UPDATE: On 19 March IAMCR appealed to its members for help translating “Journalism, Fake News & Disinformation” into new languages.

Given the rapid and unpredictable developments associated with COVID-19 at present, and the health and safety issues and constraints associated with travel and conference activity, IAMCR and our partners at Tampere University, are planning online activities in lieu of a face-to-face conference in Finland.

Nominations for the 2020 elections reflect IAMCR’s global membership. For the Executive Board we have one nominee for President, five nominees for Vice President from four continents, and one candidate each for secretary general and treasurer. For the International Council, we have 27 nominees from sixteen different countries and one territory.

As part of its ambassador initiative, IAMCR co-sponsored the ‘Journalism in 2019: Creativity, Profession, Industry’ that took place at the Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University on 6-8 February 2020.

The unfortunate and difficult situation resulting from the Covid-19 virus has led IAMCR and our partners in China, Tsinghua University in Beijing and XJTLU in Suzhou, to agree not to hold IAMCR 2020 in Beijing. The conference will now be held in Tampere, Finland, on the same dates, 12-16 July 2020.

We are sad to report the passing of Ibrahim Saleh, who was an active IAMCR member for many years. Ibrahim served on the International Council, was Chair of the Journalism Research & Education section and a member of the Publications Committee.

Issues of accessibility of academic conferences for participants with disabilities have become more visible and imperative in recent years. An IAMCR working group has now embarked on a project to establish accessibility guidelines for the association's conferences.

IAMCR stands in solidarity with journalists and news outlets working to provide coverage of the current crisis in Chile in a way that allows the reasons for the protests to be understood, gives voice to peaceful protesters, and documents abuses by the military and police anti-riot squads.

The Science of the Commons: A Note on Communication Methodology, by Muniz Sodré, is the ninth book to be published in the Palgrave/IAMCR book series Global Transformations in Media and Communication Research.

IAMCR will be taking its annual conference to Beijing, China for the first time in the association’s 63 year history. It will be held at Tsinghua University.

We are very sad to report the death of Antonio Pasquali, who died at the age of 90 on October 5th in the city of Reus in Catalonia, Spain. He was an important Latin American communication scholar with a global reach whose life was dedicated to intellectual work, research, teaching and writing.

Following each annual conference, IAMCR conducts an online survey of participants to evaluate how we did and to learn how to make future conferences better. 1,766 participants were invited to complete the survey for the 2019 conference and 53% esponded. Respondents came from 73 of the 83 countries represented at the conference.

The following sections and working groups elected new officers during their business meetings at the Madrid conference. New officers are elected for four year terms.

After a few exceptional days spent at IAMCR 2019 we would like to thank you for the opportunity granted to the School of Information Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid. It was an honour to host IAMCR and we hope we met your expectations.

In this letter to the members, IAMCR president, Janet Wasko, reflects on IAMCR's 2019 conference held in Madrid last month.

Professor Helena Sousa, a long-time member and supporter of IAMCR, was presented with a Distinguished Contribution Award during the third plenary session of IAMCR's 2019 conference in Madrid, Spain. Helena was head of the Local Organising Committee for IAMCR's 2010 Conference in Braga.

Published by UNESCO in collaboration with IAMCR and the Global Alliance for Media and Gender, "Setting the Gender Agenda for Communication Policy: New proposals from the Global Alliance on Media and Gender" was launched at the recent IAMCR conference in Madrid.

IAMCR urges its members and the media and communication research and education community to lobby the UK government against proposals that threaten creative and critical scholarship in research in media and communication and to join calls for action in other countries when similar policy moves threaten education in our field.

IAMCR expresses concern about Julian Assange's possible extradition to the United States, a precedent that threatens the welfare of whistle-blowers and discourages the sustained watchdog role of the media.

IAMCR's sections and working groups have now completed the evaluation of the record number of proposals received for IAMCR 2019 in Madrid.
