Participatory Communication Research Section

The work that is presented in the Participatory Communication Research Section is not based on any specific definition of participation. Rather, participation is a term used to refer to a number of social and planning processes occurring in many different places and in many different contexts. The Section addresses issues related to communication between community members and other stakeholders that are engaged in processes of social change. The sessions that the Section organizes at the IAMCR conferences are meant to work toward theoretical and methodological clarification. Therefore, both papers and statements discussing theoretical or methodological perspectives and/or documenting specific case studies are welcomed.

Topics cover a wide variety of issues that relate to research in relation to processes of communication that incorporate participation in an intrinsic way. This includes subjects and processes of democratisation, communication and information rights, ICTs for sustainable development, health communication, environmental communication, agricultural extension services, folk media and social movements, communication planning activities and interventions, national and cultural identities, community studies and the relationship between participation, empowerment and gender, community radio and participatory video production, non-formal participatory forms of education, participatory rapid appraisals, participatory action research, and so on.

A new PCR Section Head elected

Today, on 17 July 2020, the results of the PCR Section elections were announced at the IAMCR general assembly.

The two elected PCR co-chairs are Ana Duarte Melo (University of Minho / CECS, Portugal) and Dorismilda Flores-Márquez (Universidad De La Salle Bajío, México).

The four elected PCR vice-chairs are Jonas Agerbæk (Roskilde University, Denmark), Piyu Gong (Jinan University, China), Arun John (University of Hyderabad, India) and Ana Lúcia Nunes de Sousa (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

How to give feedback at the IAMCR 2020 conference

The IAMCR 2020 conference has opened the online papers segment. This part of the conference is only accessible to members.

All PCR authors have been asked to respond to minimally one paper. Below are the instructions for posting feedback to a paper, for IAMCR members. Co-authors of PCR papers that are not IAMCR members can send their feedback (on the particular paper that they have been emailed) to <pcr.secretariat@fsv.cuni.cz>.

Giving feedback at the PCR panels of IAMCR 2020

The Participatory Communication Research (PCR) Section has released a video to elaborate how the PCR Section sees the process of giving feedback on the work of PCR colleagues at the IAMCR 2020 Online Conference.

The short video also explains how the feedback will be organized, and addresses the CCC model that will be used more in detail, emphasizing that comments should be Courteous, Constructive and Critical.

Conference report: “Participatory communication and the struggle over human rights”

The PCR Section co-organised the event “Participatory communication and the struggle over human rights”, in collaboration with a range of Brazilian institutions: LCD, the Laboratório de Comunicação Dialógica at UERJ; NUTES, the Institute of Educational Technology for Health at UFRJ; EMERGE, the Research and Production Centre in Communication and Emergence at UFF; and PPGMC, the Postgraduate Program on Media and Everyday Life at UFF.

Programme of "Participatory Communication and the Struggle over Human Rights" ready

The international seminar "Participatory Communication and the Struggle Over Human Rights", co-organised by the PCR Section, will be held from 1 to 2 July 2019.

PCR SECTION CALL FOR LANGUAGE FACILITATORS: We need your bi-lingual skills

The PCR section also requests motivated individuals to volunteer as Language Facilitators for the PCR Section’s panels during the Madrid conference. As we are finalizing the panel creation — this year we will have 19 conference panels (10 panels in English and 9 panels that are mixed language panels - English & Spanish) are being built on the basis of their thematic affinity, with the aim of bringing together academics and researchers working on the same issues, irrespective of the language of their presentation.
